Nigeria LNG Ltd, which operates the Bonny Natural Gas Liquefaction Plant in the Eastern Niger Delta has sold 830 Billion Cubic Feet of Liquefied Natural Gas as at the end of 2022; the lastest Eni report stated. The Six-Train plant which has a production capacity of 22 million tonnes of LNG per year, associated with approximately 1,270 bcf/y of feed gas came on stream in 1999 and while the expansion development is expected to be in operation in 2024

“We have secured gas supplies to the plant under a gas supply agreement stemming from threejoint ventures – the SPDC JV, the TEPNG JV and the NAOC JV (in which Eni holds 20%). In 2022, the Bonny liquefaction plant processed approximately 830 bcf. LNG production is sold under long-term contracts and exported mainly to the United States, Asian and European markets by the Bonny Gas Transport fleet, wholly owned by Nigeria LNG, as well as is sold FOB by means of the fleet owned by third parties,” Eni said.

In December 2019, Eni and its partners in Nigeria, Nigeria LNG (NLNG) signed the final investment decision (FID) for the expansion project of the plant. The development is expected to be in operation in 2024, will increase its annual production capacity to more than 30 million tonnes per year (Mtpa).

The expansion will enable the production of an additional 7.6 Mtpa of liquefied natural gas (LNG), of which 4.2 coming from a new liquefaction train (Train 7) and 3.4 coming from the debottlenecking of existing trains. NLNG is a world class 6-train LNG plant has been in operation for 20 years and has delivered over 4,700 LNG cargoes around the world.

“With this expansion, it (NLNG) will become one of the world’s most important LNG gas hub, and it will allow Eni and its partners to further leverage the country’s abundant associated gas resources,” Eni further emphasized.

In December 2019, the FID was sanctioned for the construction of the seventh treatment unit of the Bonny liquefaction plant (Eni’s interest 10.4%). The additional treatment unit will increase the actual production capacity to over 30 mmtonnes of year. Development activity is expected to be completed in 2024 with production start-up.
