Deepsea Mira Rig set to Drill Kudu Appraisal Well, Offshore Namibia

After a disappointing drilling operations at Marula-1X exploration well in Block 2913B (PEL 56), Deepsea Mira semi-submersible rig has been contracted for the drilling of the Kharas appraisal well on the Kudu licence (PPL003) offshore Namibia in the Orange Basin BW Energy, together with NAMCOR E&P, scheduled for the second half of 2025.

According to BW Energy, the contractual agreement is part of a rig-sharing arrangement previously announced by the rig’s operator, Northern Ocean Ltd., with Rhino Resources Ltd. The contract, entered into by BW Kudu Ltd., provides access to an in-country rig and an experienced services team with a strong track record in the Orange Basin, supported by a high level of local content. 

BW Energy is the operator of the Kudu production licence (PPL003) with a 95% working interest. NAMCOR E&P, a subsidiary of the national oil company of Namibia, holds the remaining 5% carried interest.

Deepsea Mira Operation at Marula-1X well

Deepsea Mira semi-submersible drilling rig was demobilised after safely and disappointing drilling operation at the Marula-1X well offshore Namibia in the Orange Basin. The rig drilled a to a total depth of 6,460mMD on block 2913B, targeting  Albian aged sandstones, within the Marula fan complex, approximately 47 Km south of the Venus-1X well.

“The initial data from the Marula-1X well confirms a disappointing outcome for the Marula prospect. However, the full suite of well data acquired will be integrated into the evaluation to realise the block’s full potential,” Siraj Ahmed, Chief Executive Officer of Impact has commented.

No hydrocarbons were encountered in the Marula-1X well. No DST was performed. A comprehensive analysis of the well results is currently underway.
