The CEO of Eni Claudio Descalzi has met the Minister of Energy and Mines of Algeria, Mohamed Arkab, and the newly appointed CEO of SONATRACH, Rachid Hachichi, in Algiers, to discuss gas production and export, investments in the country and energy transition initiatives.

Eni and SONATRACH shared the joint programs for the development of Eni’s operated gas production, as well as gas and LNG export to Europe.

Mr. Descalzi also updated the Minister on the progress of the Memoranda of Intent (MoI) signed by Eni and SONATRACH last January. The MoI on upstream decarbonization propelled several activities, including detection of fugitive gas emissions in pipelines and plants and the identification of flaring-down opportunities in SONATRACH fields.

In the framework of the existing cooperation, the parties also discussed other energy transition initiatives, including renewables, hydrogen and electrical interconnector between Algeria and Europe.

Eni has been present in Algeria since 1981. With equity production of about 130,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2023, Eni stands as the most important international company operating in the country.
