In order to hike the country power availability, Gabon is willing to sign an energy exchange contract with Equatorial Guinea as part of an electricity interconnection project. This is what emerges from the audience granted on January 27, 2023 in Libreville by the Minister of Energy and Hydraulic Resources, Oswald Séverin Mayounou, to the delegation of the Central African Power Pool (PEAC), led by his permanent secretary, Azarak Mogro Atadet.
“ The Minister of Energy reiterated the availability of the highest authorities of Gabon to the signing of the said energy exchange contract between the States, being particularly aware of the current urgent need for energy in the northern region of Gabon. Also a copy of the letter formalizing this position from the Gabonese party to the other party (Equatorial Guinea) was delivered immediately to the PEAC delegation ”, we learn.
In addition, we learn, the Gabonese minister stressed the urgency of launching the work, especially since all the conditions seem to be met within the two electricity companiesconcerned, namely the Energy and Water Company of Gabon (SEEG) and the Sociedad de Electricidad de Guinea Ecuatorial (Segesa). The permanent secretary meanwhile reassured that all measures will be taken so that a meeting, for the continuation of the negotiations between the parties, will be held in Brazzaville in the first half of February 2023.
The network interconnection and cross-border electrification project between the Republic of Equatorial Guinea via Ebibeyin and the Republic of Gabon via Bitam and whose discussions have been ongoing dates back to 2014. These negotiations, we learn, reflect the will of the two States to accelerate the implementation of the sub-regional integration project through a strategic axis: the interconnection of electricity networks.
