As Russian and Ukrainian war bites harder leading to prevailing European gas crisis and its ugly consequence to German’s economy owing Russia’s gas supply ban to Germany, Germany has earnestly exploring new discovery wells to cushion this effect.
Neptune Energy as an old ally to German’s energy sector is not relenting to augment to this energy quest. The company has recently announced that drilling has begun on a new production well at its operated Rӧmerberg oil field in the Rhine Valley, south-western Germany.
It is the ninth production well on the Rӧmerberg field and is expected to come onstream in Q4 this year. Average production from the field is approximately 2,000 boepd.
“Securing energy supplies is a top priority across Europe and particularly here in Germany. By unlocking additional supplies of much-needed domestic energy, Neptune is supporting the needs of industry and consumers in Germany,” Neptune Energy’s Managing Director in Germany, Andreas Scheck, said.
An application to increase production from the field, currently limited to 500 tons of crude oil per day, is in the final stages. Once approved, Neptune intends to progress plans to drill additional production wells to develop the reservoir further.
The new production well is being drilled with a rig operated by Drilltec, with final vertical depth of around 2,180 metres expected to be reached in October this year.
Römerberg is the largest oil field that Neptune operates in the Rhine Valley. This 5–6 km² field holds significant reserves and produces more than 3 kboe of crude oil daily. Further development in this field to expand production is a priority for the business.
The Römerberg field was discovered by accident in 2003 when a geothermal drilling project struck oil 2,000 metres underground below the city of Speyer. The field began producing in 2007. In the years since, Neptune and our partner Palatina GeoCon have drilled nine producing wells at two operating sites and produced more than 9 mmboe. Produced oil is transported by tanker to the Mineral Oil Refinery Oberrhein in Karlsruhe.
The Rӧmerberg oil field was discovered in 2003 and began producing in 2007.
