Nigeria Minister of State for Petroleum Oil Senator Heineken Lokpobiri has received the Senegalese Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Nicolas Auguste Nyouky, and the country’s Minister of Energy, Petroleum and Mines, Mr Birame Soulèye Diop, to chart new energy partnerships and collaborations with Nigeria
Disclosing the plan for the energy strategic regional alliance between the two oil-producing countries on his X handle, Senator Lokpobiri emphasized the importance of strengthening regional and continental ties in solving Africa’s energy challenge, citing that Nigeria is uniquely positioned, by virtue of its experience, history, and capacity, to lead the African drive toward sustainable energy solutions.
According to Lokpobiri, driving energy solutions in Africa collectively will empower indigenous companies to compete with International Oil Companies (IOCs) and evolve into IOCs themselves as they expand beyond national borders, ensuring greater in-country value retention.
“Despite challenges in the oil sector, we are implementing significant reforms and transformation initiatives to upscale production and meet both domestic and international obligations. Nigeria remains willing to partner with Senegal and other prospective investors,” Lokpobiri stated.
Senegal’s energy sector, led by Minister Birame Souleye Diop, is expanding the country’s exploration and production frontiers to leverage projects like Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) for industrialization and energy access through a gas pipeline infrastructure that connects offshore hubs GTA and Yakaar-Teranga to power plants.
Senegal’s 2025 oil production from the offshore Sangomar field significantly exceeded expectations, reaching 36.1 million barrels. This surpassed both the initial 2025 projection of 30.53 million barrels and the mid-year upward revision to 34.7 million barrels.
