A Nigerian Civil Organization Group known as Niger Delta Environmental Justice Coalition has organized a peaceful protest in London outside the vicinity of the Nigerian High Commission Office demanding justice for Ikerete Udo, a field coordinator with Tantita Security Services Ltd, who was allegedly murdered by suspected oil thieves while protecting pipelines in the Niger Delta.
The death of ikerete Udo is a death too many for those who have sacrecified their life in line of duty to protect the nation critical pipeline infrastructure noting the invaluable economic importance these assets are to the financial nerves of the country.
The protest led by Mrs. Busayo Charles, spokesperson for the Environmental justice activists was a manifestation of the incessant killings and the demonstration of call to the respective governmental authorities to investigate these senseless and wanto killings and to bring the perperators to book.
In submission of a formal petition to the Nigerian High Commission, Mrs. Busayo Charles advocated for a holistic and immediate government action to investigate Udo’s killing and prosecute those responsible for these heinous crime.
“Udo was killed in the line of duty while protecting Nigeria’s oil pipelines. He paid the ultimate price for defending our national assets. The government must not let his death go in vain. He lost his life courageously protecting the nation’s oil assets. The least the government can do is support the family he left behind,” the statement read
“Nigeria is a just and fair country, and I believe justice will be done,” she added, urging President Bola Tinubu’s administration to provide financial compensation and long-term support to Udo’s bereaved family,” the petition continued.
The demonstrators further perceived the crime as co-ordinated moves by unpatriotic elements to evade thorough accountability of the nation mono source foreign exchange earnings. In its petition submitted to the High Commission, the group urged the commission to prevail on relevant authorities in Nigeria to protect frontline personnel working to combat crude oil theft, a crime that costs the country billions in revenue annually.
“These individuals must be probed for their possible roles in the region’s ongoing instability and criminal operations,” the petition stated.
The group also called for a halt in the prevailing campaign of misinformation recently trailing in the public space with the aim of causing atmosphere of restiveness and rancor in the region and invariably tarnishing the images of the leadership of Tantita Security Services, especially High Chief Government Ekpemupolo aka Tompolo, and Dr. Dennis Brutu Otuaro, Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme..
As regards to the actions taken so far by the management of Tantita Security Services in support of the bereaved Udo’s family, Mrs. Charles commended Tompolo for his kindhearted benevolence and urged him not to be discouraged by nefarious activities of these unpatriotic elements in safeguarding the nation’s critical assets in the oil-rich Niger Delta.
In response to the group demands, the Nigerian High Commission in London acknowledged receipt of the petition and assured the activists that it would be forwarded to appropriate government channels in Nigeria for prompt action.
