Nigeria and Canada, through the Nigerian Minister of State, Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo and his counterpart, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Canada, Mr. Tim Hudson, have entered into a major strategic gas investment alliance and disclosed this during a recent meeting in Canada.
The meeting held on the sidelines of the just-concluded Global Energy Show (GES) in Calgary, Canada, was described as a productive bilateral engagement that centered on strengthening cooperation between Nigeria and Alberta in gas development, energy transition, and emissions reduction.
The hon. minister in his speech at the show reiterate Nigeria’s position as a global gas investment hub with vast petroleum reserves and emphasized the country’s readiness to attract direct foreign energy investors through a stable, enabling regulatory framework already put in place and designed to unlock opportunities and regional economic growth.
The final arrangement is currently being processed by the Nigerian technical working group, in pursuit of the necessary modalities to pave the way for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) whose core mission is to facilitate technical exchanges and promote capacity-building and academic partnerships between the two countries.
According to Hon. Ekperikpe, the engagement reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to attract strategic partnerships that will unlock the greater value of its abundant natural gas reserves, estimated at 215.19 trillion cubic feet (TCF) through various critical gas projects.
He highlighted major infrastructural projects, such as the AKK and OB3 pipelines, as critical assets for expanding gas distribution within Nigeria, strengthening regional supply across West and North Africa, and repositioning Nigeria as a long-term supplier to European energy markets, while reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to global partnership and energy security.
In a similar vein, the Nigerian Minister has, on Jun 4, 2026, joined the African counterparts from Algeria and Niger at the 5th Ministerial Meeting of the Steering Committee of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) Project, where he reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the successful delivery of a gas transformative regional initiative.
“We have reviewed key reports and remain committed to providing the support required to advance this important project. Together with our partners in Algeria and Niger, Nigeria will continue to work towards the successful,” He said.
