ExxonMobil has awarded McDermott Energy Solutions a letter of intent (LOI) for limited engineering and procurement work on the Rovuma LNG Phase 1 development in Mozambique. The award supports the project as it moves toward a final investment decision (FID) expected later this year.

ExxonMobil Moçambique issued the award on behalf of the Area 4 partners to the SMDC joint venture, which includes McDermott, Saipem, Daewoo Engineering & Construction and China Petroleum Engineering & Construction Corp. (CPECC).

The work will help the partners continue defining and planning the onshore LNG project as they prepare for FID. McDermott has already completed the project’s front-end engineering and design (FEED).

Rovuma LNG will use 12 modular liquefaction trains with a planned production capacity of 18.6 million tonnes per year (Mtpa). The project targets startup in 2031 and will be ExxonMobil’s largest single investment.

McDermott Chairman and CEO Michael McKelvy said the company will build on its LNG experience in Mozambique as it continues work on the project.

McDermott will carry out engineering for the liquefaction modules and other inside battery limits (ISBL) facilities from its offices in London and Gurgaon. The SMDC joint venture will manage the project from Milan.

McDermott expects the project to create long-term economic benefits for Mozambique and strengthen the country’s role as a major global LNG supplier.
