Nigeria has been admitted into the International Energy Agency (IEA) as an Association country, a move described as a significant milestone that strengthens the country’s participation in global energy governance and supports its drive towards universal energy accessibility and industrialisation
According to Nigerian Minister of State for Petroleum Gas, Honorable Ekperikpe Ekpo, this achievement reflects Nigeria’s growing strategic importance in the global energy landscape and reinforces the confidence of the international community in Nigeria’s partnership with the IEA,
He stated that current admission to the IEA will provide greater access to global expertise, policy insights and technical cooperation in critical areas such as energy security, gas development, electricity access, clean cooking, methane emissions reduction and investment mobilization, which are being implemented under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Ekperikpe urges more African countries to deepen their engagement with the IEA in synergy towards advancing energy security, industrialisation and sustainable development across the continent, as Nigeria remains committed to working closely with the IEA and international partners “To build a resilient, competitive and future-ready energy sector that delivers lasting benefits for our people”.
The International Energy Agency is a Paris-based autonomous intergovernmental organization, established in 1974, that provides policy recommendations, analysis and data on the global energy sector. It comprises 32 member and 13 association countries representing 75% of global energy demand.
