The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Mr. Joseph Abuabu Dadzie, underscored the extensive potential of Ghana’s key oil and the crucial role of natural gas in West Africa’s energy transition at the ongoing Africa Oil Week in Cape Town, South Africa.

During discussions, Mr. Dadzie outlined GNPC’s strategic initiatives in the Tano, Voltaian, and Keta Basins, emphasizing their importance for the nation’s energy security and economic development. He presented the Voltaian Basin as a promising frontier for exploration, detailing the Corporation’s ongoing research and exploratory activities aimed at unlocking its potential.

“Ghana is positioned as a major destination for oil and gas investment, and we invite investors and partners to seize the emerging opportunities within our hydrocarbon sector,” Mr. Dadzie stated, highlighting GNPC’s commitment to enhancing exploration in the region.

“The Voltaian Basin represents a significant opportunity for Ghana to diversify its energy portfolio. We are focused on fully realizing its potential, benefiting both the local economy and the wider West African region,” he added.

In a separate session on the role of gas in West Africa, Mr. Dadzie emphasized the importance of natural gas as a foundational element in establishing new energy corridors across the region. He stressed the necessity of collaboration among West African nations to develop and expand gas infrastructure, bolster regional trade, and enhance energy security.

“GNPC is dedicated to leading West Africa’s energy future by promoting the development of robust natural gas infrastructure. Expanding these facilities will strengthen Ghana’s energy capacity and foster greater regional cooperation in gas trade,” Mr. Dadzie noted.

He further called for harmonized policy and regulatory frameworks among West African countries to facilitate smooth natural gas trade and attract investment in the region’s energy sector. The panel discussion, moderated by Renaud Brimont, Head of EMEARC Consulting at Wood Mackenzie, included influential industry leaders such as Michelle Burkett, Managing Director of the West African Gas Pipeline Company, and Dr. Ainojie “Alex” Irune, Executive Director & COO of Oando Energy Resources.

GNPC’s participation in Africa Oil Week emphasizes the Corporation’s commitment to securing Ghana’s energy future through the sustainable development of its oil and gas resources while promoting regional energy cooperation.
